The Rubicon Trail is one of the two most difficult off road trails in California. It is brutal. You can start from Lake Tahoe and end at Loon Lake. Or go the other way. Regardless it requires a very good vehicle and driver. Even then vehicle damage is almost unavoidable. I have a well set up Bronco Badlands on thirty five inch tires. I think it is adequate to do the trail. However as curious as I am to see the trail I am unwilling to even scratch my car. So….
Long ago when I was a young dirt bike rider I started the trail from the Tahoe side and made it a couple of miles before throwing in the towel. I have never been to Loon Lake but I would like to see that end of the trail. The trail started originally at the Wentworth springs campground. A few years back at a point a couple of miles beyond the campground a new extension was developed from wentworth Springs Road to Loon Lake. I would like to try to drive this section.
My plan is to drive from the San Jose,California area to Georgetown, California and then drive the Wentworth Springs Road to the campground and spend the night. This is a very remote area. There is however a little bar that also rents primitive rooms about two thirds of the way to the campground off Wentworth springs road. It could be an alternative place to spend the night if I hook up with otherwise nice people who are averse to camping. One overnight, do as much of the trail as possible, and then back home. Or… I am open to any other suggestions.
Anyone with a four wheel drive is welcome to come along. I could carry up to three passengers and would like company but probably not that many. Storage in a Bronco is limited. Start date is open ended. I can go almost any time. Very flexible.
